May-Benson, Sc.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, President/Owner of TMB Education, LLC and OTR, Inc., is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration.  She is the author of the Adult/Adolescent Sensory History (ASH), the GI Assessment and the Test of Ideational Praxis in addition to numerous articles and book chapters on praxis, ideation, and sensory integration.  She has extensive experience with children and adults with autism and a diverse clinical background having worked in private and public school settings as well as private practice.  She is past Chairperson of the Sensory Integration Special Interest Section of the American Occupational Therapy Association.  She is the recipient of the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence and the A. Jean Ayres Award from AOTF, The Alice S. Bachman Award from Pediatric Therapy Network, and the Catherine Trombly Award from the Massachusetts Association of Occupational Therapy.

Descrição

Title:    Clinical Assessment and Practical Interventions for Praxis –  From Ideation to Execution

Description:   This course will present an overview of the components of praxis with an emphasis on clinical assessment and intervention of practic problems in children using a sensory integration frame of reference.  The impact of various practic problems on functional performance will be highlighted.  A framework for observing, assessing, clinical reasoning, and identifying ideation, motor planning, sequencing, bilateral coordination and projected action sequence problems within a sensory integration treatment model will be presented.  A clinical observation-based assessment will be presented and used to develop observation skills and clinical reasoning in identifying and treating praxis problems.  Practical intervention strategies using both top-down and bottom up approaches will be highlighted through videoreview, case studies, and lecture formats.

Title: Advanced Intervention for Ideational Praxis – Affordances to Executive Functions

Course Description: This course will provide participants with advanced intervention strategies
to address ideational problems in children with praxis deficits. Difficulties generating ideas and
plans for action are common problems in children with sensory integration and praxis deficits,
including those with autism spectrum disorder. These ideational problems can be particularly
difficult to treat. This course will provide a novel intervention approach which will address the
difficulties in recognizing and acting on action and object affordances and problems in
representational thought which underlie ideational praxis difficulties. In addition, this course
will address the relationship of ideation in praxis with executive function skills. Videotape
examples and case study presentations will be used to illustrate intervention techniques. The
course format, a combination of lecture, videotapes, and small group discussion allows for
opportunities to address participant’s’ questions and concerns.

Objectivos

Title:    Clinical Assessment and Practical Interventions for Praxis –  From Ideation to Execution

By the end of the course the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the underlying neural and sensory mechanisms of the various practic dysfunctions
  2. Observe, assess and differentiate the range of practic dysfunctions from ideation to execution problems
  3. Apply top-down and bottom up treatment principles appropriately to different problems using clinical reasoning
  4. Identify they ways various praxis problems impact on functional performance
  5. Identify strategies and treatment plan for improving performance

Title:  Advanced Intervention for Ideational Praxis – Affordances to Executive Functions

By the end of the course the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify behaviors indicative of ideational problems.
  2. Identify several bottom-up intervention strategies for promoting development of  object and action affordances.
  3. Utilize a top-down intervention approach for promoting representational thought needed for ideational praxis.
  4. Describe how ideational problems and their intervention relate to other cognitive difficulties including executive function skills.
  5. Develop a treatment plan for addressing ideational praxis difficulties.
